"Chai le lo"... A terse and shrill voice fell into my ears that raised me from my deep slumber. In half sleep I ignored it.. and perhaps so did other passengers in my bay. Few bays ahead, a commotion grabbed some of my attention, but in search of some more sleep I again chose to ignore it. Few minutes later, another round of "Chai le lo... time ho gaya" (Take tea, its time)... This made the other half of the sleep go away as well. Few seconds later I realised what was the shouting and commotion was all about. It was the shout from the waiter of the 2442 waking up passengers, well rather forcibly, at 0530 in the morning to have morning tea!! And when I finally came to senses, I realised how non sense the things had become onboard 2442!!

The next few paras are full of Rajdhani bashing so if you want some peaceful time ahead, avoid reading further.

It was summer of 2002 (if I recall correctly) when I had my first ride onboard the Rajdhani express. I still remember my excitement of booking the tickets on the newly introduced New Delhi Bilaspur The Rajdhani Express. I had gone to Sarojini Nagar booking counter pillion riding on the scooter with dad. And I had to generously contribute my pocket money of 25 Rs which I had preciously kept in my newly acquired wallet. Being in school wallet wasnt a thing that I had to take to school. But I was feeling a bit grown up to take it with me for booking a Rajdhani ticket. And the perseverance did pay, or atleast I did pay those 25 Rs, out of how much I wont know. The booking clerk's face who booked my first Rajdhani ticket suggested him to be of North East origin. My limited height meant there wasnt much I could peep in the counter. But a sum from dad and my 25 Rs yielded us back a Rajdhani ticket. And then the sleepless nights started. The day of journey was still away but the ticket started giving goosebumps. On the time table, to see a two stop run from New Delhi to NGP was excitement unlimited. And when we had finally boarded The train, I was awestruck by the chilled airconditioner, neatly dressed waiters, fragrance all around, a maroon carpet that welcomed us into the most prestigious class on IR.

We had a SL/SU and SL/SU on adjacent bays. The announcements started informing us about the travel and so did the rich servings. It was 2040 dep from NDLS on those days, and as soon as the train started we were handed a welcome sweet bun. Everything was plain impressive. The food, the ambience, the personal lights of 2A (it was an airline style white colored light rather than the steel one). The dinner was rich in items and cutlery. It used to take good fine minutes to get the tray in eat-ready condition. So many things to open.. the neatly packed spoon and forks, salad and the curd in the earthen pot. Morning had a chocolate pair, biscuit pair and a thermos-cup combo for the morning tea. Sipping it with the train rolling in the ghats between ET and NGP is an experience beyond my literary capability.

In those days, such was the aura and service of The Rajdhani Express that could make one take the name with respect.

Well, that was good 12 years back. Had a plenty of trips on 2442 and then came its change of schedule and in came the sampark Kranti. All this ensured that trips in 2442 reduced and almost stopped. Last Saturday, the stars aligned to bestow upon me another trip on the 2442. The excitement wasnt as in the 2002 but some of it was still there. Being a railfan always keeps one excited for the special journeys.

The 2442 still sports my favourite ICF livery and this time it had no Duronto mismatch. Pure Rajdhani livery through all (7Bs+5As+1H). EOGs as usual had Shatabdi band as a "jugaad". The livery standing proudly in Pf 15 looked so much more handsome than the dumb LHB livery of Poorva on Pf 16 and DBRT Raj on Pf 14. DBRT Raj had arrived and was empty. Looking at the livery, I was swarmed by the excitement yet again, and felt to be treated like 2002 yet again. But as soon as stepped inside, I was reminded that it wasnt 2002. And as the journey progressed, I was convinced that we haven't come 12 yrs ahead, we had gone 120 yrs back as far as 2442 is concerned.

We began from NDLS dot on time, but before NZM itself we had made more stops than what we were scheduled for all the way to NGP! We crawled through NZM a brief sprint near Okhla and again a crawl. When this start stop happened too many times, I surrendered myself to the fate and that crushed my hope of a superfast ride on the fastest section of IR. The run looked on time, but it was nowhere close to what a Rajdhani was supposed to run. We were to allow all greens till two three blocks ahead but the acceleration and deceleration pattern suggested all we were getting were double yellows at best. Bored by these interruptions in the run, I looked for that elusive Rajdhani treatment elsewhere. Soon enough came the first serving from the pantry.

The tray looked pathetic to say the least. The oiled kachori was a particular eyesore and the tray looked a far ask from photographs one will find on internet onboard other Rajdhanis. Had I taken a picture and posted, it would be censored as "A" from CBFC. The flasks were all gone and so were the chocolates. Tea was served from a big container (the way it is served in other trains) and you had to bring your cups to the container to have your boiled water. Now was that a Rajdhani or a Central Jail? The miserable evening snacks done and I feared the worst for dinner. Meanwhile a fellow Bengali passenger was quick to comment how excellent is Rajdhani food in Eastern twins. I could only nod in affirmation seeing my dear 2442 reduced to trash.

The non Rajdhani run would continue as we overtook Gondwana and others enroute to MTJ and further to AGC. We had taken a good 30 min more than what we should have taken as per my calculations. The soup meanwhile came even when it wasnt dark outside! And no points in guessing that it was not even warm. Thankfully the pantry guys let the sun go down before serving the dinner. And the dinner was a pure disaster. We were served a plastic spoon! The salad was gone and so was the pickle. The lesser said about prepared food the better. Seeing all this, I could only think that its high time food is made optional in 2442. CGSK food was much better served than this rubbish in 2442. Before JHS, Barista's vanilla cup came and thankfully vanilla never disappoints. Only, second thing that looked unchanged since 2002. JHS arrival was a good 20 min delayed. By then every penny of excitement had evaporated and I dint bother the quantum of delay since then.

Morning was supposed to be pleasant but for the episode in the opening paragraph. The pantry guy woke up everybody like a prisoner of Tihar Jail to serve the tea!! Needless to say, he was shouted away from every bay. This is not what you are supposed to do at 5:30 in the morning. Newspapers were missing and the pantry guy kept saying one thing or the other when people asked for the tea at 07:15 or so. I woke up finally at around 0730 and 10 min later we stopped into Gondia. An irritant of a stop for me. If I had my way, I would have let 2442 fly through the station at 10 kmph more than the MPS. The platform and the train looked alien to each other. Noone boarded neither anyone alighted. Looked like an unscheduled halt. And finally came the turn of the breakfast. If dinner was a spoiler, I have no adjectives left to describe breakfast. Again the tea in the jail manner and again the chocolate pair was missing.

After this ordeal, the classic part was yet to follow. Even after ensuring an inmate like treatment to everyone, the pantry guy came asking for a "tip"!! And some passengers were generous enough to give him some! A sardarji in side lower put a 100 Rs note and stretched his hand out to take back 50Rs note from the tray. At this the pantry guy protested. Sardarji finally took it when he threatened withdrawal of 100Rs! Dad was angry enough and the tip ritual further agitated him. We plainly refused and the PC guy persisted.. "Sahab itna khilaaya pilaaya aapko" (we served you so much).. At this in a controlled anger, Dad shot him back.. "this is your duty". He still persisted and it all looked like begging!! (I am sorry but this is what it all looked like). I only looked out of the window as the train entered Durg maintaining its 20 min delay.

After Raipur, entire B3 was empty save 6-7 passengers. The train though rumbled on and deposited us on BSP Pf 6 at 12:05. The most forgettable timely run I ever had. When I deboarded, the train looked like alien. It was faar from what my 2442 used to be.. the 2442 which I personally enjoyed.

On a side note, complaint book was thoroughly refused. With everything in shambles, I was left wondering what complaint will do. To complain about one or two things is another issue, but here, everything needed an overhaul. The existence of Rajdhani the class was under threat!

Romance with trains is something very close to the railfans. It is the ethos which made us what we are. In the world of railways where everything is mechanical it is the emotions of railfan coming into picture that makes us exist. And this phenomena, this attachment, this bonding begins somewhere, somehow. For me, as far as I can recall, and realise, the Shreeganesh of this emotional attachment was on a dark rainy night almost two decades back. We were having dinner in my maternal grandfather's place. The power was out as one would expect in those days. Normally in smaller places post dusk things used to become quite. Lack of power added to the silence. It was dinner time and we were all having our dinner. Just then a sound was heard. This I later learnt is called a Whistle of a train or a horn. That sound amid the light rains increased and then went into oblivion and was accompanied by another sound which today I would call the clitter clatter of rails. It was clear that a kilometer away a train has gone by from our Naila (now Janjgir Naila) station. As it receded and with nothing much to discuss suddenly someone said.. "Mail hogi". I heard it and then listened it. Question arised what is mail? For a child early in his school days, it was easy and fun for others to answer. I was told in an emphasising manner that it is the train that runs between Bombay and Howrah and is running non stop since Bilaspur (45 kms from Naila). Proper emphasis was also laid on the fact that it runs on time. Always at around dinner time we can hear it pass. The sermons were bestowed as an order, and I took them as a 'farmaan' to accept the supermacy of the Bombay Howrah mail and probably it was expected that next time this topic came up for discussion I should always have a mental note of the punctuality ready.

This particular incident made my mind fly. The mere thoughts like Non stop, fast, on time etc etc led to various pictures in my mind. I was a traveller on Nagpur Tata passenger at that time for my journeys from Kamptee (near NGP) to Naila. And that led to the first railway comparison for me. The comparison between the pathetic NGP-Tata passenger and the holy Bombay Howrah mail. And thats when the romance started. The awe for the unknown unseen but yet realised. I was yet to see the mail. I had painted countless pictures of the same.

And as they say you always get to hear what you always want to hear. Soon the folk stories about mail started coming to me. I was always delighted rather looking forward to a mere mention. So much grew the attachment that when we were told to write my first telegram in school (not particularly that year but sometime later) I proudly mentioned 8001 Bombay Howrah mail in the subject! And boy how delightful I felt on that day!

Our bread and butter Tata NGP passenger used to depart from NIA at night. And later as I came to know the holy mail used to dash through our station only some time before. How I always ished it to be running late so that I could atleast look at it ones. But as the folkfore had told, you can always bet on the punctuality of mail.

Later on as the days passed and I saw a thing called the railway time table. With my interest growing in railways it looked like a goldmine! And what did I searched for first of all... the Bombay Howrah mail! And as the days progressed I was made aware of a phenomenon called Geetanjali. At first it was hard to believe that something ever was faster than the holy mail! And Geetanjali express was the second addition to that worship list of mine. Somewhere, somehow I always wished to see either of the two. First encounter with Gitanjali was not that far. It was again courtesy NGP-Tata passenger. We were waiting for it in Kamptee pf 1. When that exciting green signal was there. Dad said it could be for the Gitanjali and I then ordered my eyes do all the hard work. I was looking into the horizon as far as I could make out for that headlight of Gitanjali. Soon it appeared grew bigger and bigger with a shrill horn and went going and going. I was already its disciple so it felt as if it was going at a pace of not in a mood to stop. I had seen in that in the TT that it would stop next at Gondia and after two more stops it would be into Bilaspur! So quick I thought and here we were ready to spend more than 12 hours in our Tata NGP!

But still that rubaru with the coveted Bombay Howrah mail was pending. And it happened unexpectedly. I was voca about my love for the mail at home. And my cousins teased me a lot over this which they all considered strange. And then one day the mail silenced all their doubts. We were part of a marriage procession towards Raigarh and came stop at a level crossing. Incidentally some of my cousins (still our school days) who for me dared to dent the supermacy of mail were with me. The wait grew and grew and then the moment arrived. The loco with its beaming headlight passed at a sedate pace. And then just after the loco came the board that I always wanted to see... the board that read crisp and clear "Bombay Howrah Mail"! I literally screamed and looked in awe as the looong consist went by. It might have been a simply a routine pass but for me it was The mail. I looked with awe as coach after coach glided past smartly, The pace was like it was an exhibition. And as it felt to charm its disciple, to rest the doubts of fellow cousins, it went on increasing its pace. By the time its tiny flickering light went out the mail had made its mark. It had made me believe even more so that the love, romance was not misplaced.

And since then it had been many many times I have spotted this magical train. And on most occassions it had made me surrender to its supermacy. The aura of mail is certainly hard in me to diminish! The actual ride on mail came to me after a looong loong time as a person who had crossed his silver jubilee.

December was traditionally never the brightest in terms of my rail travels. But things changed for good as the year ended and I got my two trips. One was NDLS-JAT and one was NDLS-BSP. The best part was I had to travel alone to BSP and I had a reasonably good number of days at my disposal as vacations. In short, I could think of a Railfan’s connection from NDLS to BSP.
And to make the most of the occasion, I decided to fulfil a long pending wish.. and that was to take the magical 2002 till Bhopal and then anything to BSP. I just couldn’t wait for the thrill of the fastest run possible on IR.
The only worry was F.O.G.!! 18th Dec is the time of the year for which even the Mausam Bhawan at Lodhi Road cant tell whether there will be fog or not! I just prayed as I dint wish to miss the 150kmph bazooka!
The build up to the d-day were sedate. No threatening spell of fog made up the headlines and I tried hard to stay optimistic. The other trouble with fog was if it delays 2002, in all probability I was to miss the Amarkantak .
The morning, I woke up before alarm at 3.45! Before going to the mirror, I jumped up, wore my spects and looked at the heavens. Relieved I was to see a clear sky! I prayed again for a clear day ahead. He said as a matter-of-factly. Instantly as a nuclear chain reaction all my senses came to life. I felt sooo good to hear the praise of the mighty shatabdi from my cab driver. He revealed how he has seen Shatabdi rip through Ballabhgarh (from where he hails) Level Crossing. His each word of appreciation for the king fuelled my excitement and anticipation.
In the open Delhi roads it took just 15-20 min to reach outside pf1 of NDLS from my home. It was about 1 hr for the king to depart. C7 was to come just as one enters from the main gate of NDLS. No FOB, no walking. It was becoming as simple as it can get. I had Samit Da’s Atlas (for the first time) and TT for company. But I had missed something....... A Pen!!!!! Immediately bought one from the book shop in pf1.
0549 I was blessed with the first looks of THE train. The moment for which I had waited all my life was here. It was renewed love at first sight when I saw 30222 snaking in with brightly lit swanky coaches of the Linke Hoffman Bosche make in an equally brightly lit pf1 of NDLS. The loco had its markers on and that added to the setting.
The train had LED boards and the station had digital charts for W/L status. Looked impressive. Pantry Car staff had taken their positions to load in their ifs and buts for the journey ahead. And so was a not-so-heavy crowd with a fair presence of people from across the borders. “Taj bound folks” came the first thought. And I focussed back on the Shatabdi. Entered into the train with a feeling of dream coming true. And thankfully weather was clear still. I duly got my window seat. Once sit I opened the tray, took out my new Pen, atlas, TT and settled down.
Sitting there I wished the LPs luck . “C’mon boys, give me the full blast!!” This was my chance to see what Priority means on IR! Meanwhile my co-passengers were somewhere from Eastern neighbourhood. And they clicked everything from the Morning tea plate to Breakfast to what not. In front of me was a lady with her very naughty boy and an extremely cute little girl. The little girl when sat on the chair, the chair looked BIIIG.. So small she was.. .. And from NDLS her first of many questions to her mom was “Mumma Chambal kab aayegi..?”. This made me smile while people along side me chit chattied each other. I was now eagerly waiting for 0615. As soon as the watch struck the numbers, we started moving ahead with a nice jerk. 11 coaches with EOG was nothing for the mighty beast incharge ahead. As soon as we started we slowed and came to a halt. And so did all my expectations of mighty speed. It felt like all set for the movie and power off. I tried my best to remain positive and seconds in halt passed like decades. Meanwhile LKO Shat moved out from wat looked like pf9 and our halt ensured that I was to miss the parallel action. Anyways, it was something else I was looking forward to.
Nevertheless, we moved again and this time it was the real Shreeganesh of yet another magical performance by 2002. Just that this time I was on board too. The white ahead swiftly took us out of Shivaji Brdge, Tilak bridge. Saw empty rake of Samata Exp and Taj Exp in NZM COD which were to start a few hrs later. It was 06.30 and we moved swiftly through NZM. It had already witnessed some morning arrivals and looked busy as usual. The large windows made the sighting even more wonderful. By now I could safely declare to myself that there was not going to be any severe fog. As the sun emerged, the horizon went on going farther and clearer. 06.37 we were moving through Okhla and 06.46 we we were flying through Ballabhgarh. (29 kms ex NZM in 16 min, 109 kmph). (*please note that the distances are taken from erail and I dint have a GPS to substantiate it) We slowed down again at 06.55 to negotiate a SR of 20 kmph. As a result it took us 10 min from BVH to cross Asaoti at 06.57. Palwal was dispatched at 07.02 (11 kms in 5 min, 132 kmph!!!). And thus we kept rising. The ride was turning out to b what I had desired. Inspite of the SR, it was great how the train resumed its high speed run. Rundhi, Sholaka, Hodal Banchari etc all were crossed in a jiffy as we rocketed our way through to Kosi. Just after Hodal, we slowed down again till Kosi and crossed it at 07.28. We crossed Punjab Mail here which was the culprit for slow run. Once we had cleared Punjab Mail, we again went on a rampage. 41 kms till Mathura was covered in 18 min which converts to Avg speed in this section at 137 kmph!! The large windows of the Shatabdi was making the journey even more enjoyable. By 07.44 we had halted at the MTJ Pf 1 after making a grand entry. And even after such a helluva run we were delayed by 11 min!! I guess Punjab Mail and SR of 20 kmph is chiefly responsible for this.
07.46 we were out of MTJ and moved swiftly through approaching wayside stations. By 08.18 we were already in AGC city limits but again we moved pretty slowly. Picked up again at Raja ki Mandi and went through at MPS of 80 kmph at 08.25 and at 08.30 we marched into AGC pf 1. As expected the train almost got empty here. But surprisingly (for me atleast) people started filling up again.
MAS Duronto bound for NZM was there at pf 2 or 3. We had crossed BCT Raj somewhere near Kosi I guess. We were served breakfast duly before AGC and passengers boarding at AGC were served breakfast again! Nice I thought.
We started again and I said goodbye to 150 capable stretch. Although we reached AGC late but we did peaked summits in terms of speed and had a longish stretch of full throttle inbetween as well. Overall I would say I was very happy the way we negotiated the fastest stretch on IR.
0855 we crossed Jajau, 26 kms from AGC in abt 25 min and looked a marked slower than what was before AGC. 0902 we sped passed Mania at full throttle. 14 kms in 7 min means we were back in business. 0908 we had rumbled through Dhaulpur which meant we were continuing our 120 kmph blast. At 0912 we were crossing Chambal which looked absolutely serene through the large LHB windows. Less than 3 hrs after departing NDLS, we were into Chambal where the little girl in front of my seat wanted to be for so long. In these three hours she had taken a nap or two as well. And stared through the large wide windows with her eyes extra-widely opened. She looks impressed to say the least. 0922 we were into Morena. 28 kms from Dholpur in 14 min!! Which meant we were keeping pace. However globally we were 20 min delayed. We exited 2 min later and crossed Rairu at excellent speed after a slow run for couple of min. We were peaking again as we zipped through Rairu at 09.44. 09.50 we had reached near GWL washing lines and 0955 we were into GWL.
Quite a few passengers boarded the train here. Meanwhile we had slashed few min of our delay between Morena and GWL. We again sped through the majestic rock cuttings, criss crossed with our fellow track, negotiated a horse shoe and passed Dabra at 10.25. Less than 30 min for a journey of 42 kms. It was 1030 when we moved slowly through Kotra.
1105 we were into pf 1 of JHS. We were on time since GWL here and it was time to bid good bye to a terrific pair of LPs who had made my day. On pf 3 was LHB rake of GKP-LTT Exp marked NE. Exactly after an 8 min halt we bade good bye to pf 1 of JHS. Kudos to the JHS station staff for a timely despatch.
Finally at 11.45 we had the first unscheduled halt!! After more than 430 kms of run since morning had we halted somewhere. And till we had made a halt, I dint realise this!! We halted for a good 7 min however. We strated again and crossed Lalitpur at 12.20. 90 kms ex JHS in a little over 1 hr. Considering a halt of almost 7 min inbetween this was mighty impressive. By 1250 we had skipped Bina. That means another 63 kms or so in half an hour flat. (120 kmph +). We had a literal signal free fly pass in this stretch and we were probably to cover the accumulated delay. Certainly for the last 550 kms or so we were enjoying top priority.
After lunch, all my attention and early rising started taking a toll on my eyes and unwantedly I went into a sleep. I woke up sensing the train had halted. I went to the door and we had halted just after Ganj Basoda I guess. We had moved fairly ahead of the station and that was my guess looking towards the station. Something had happened as some of the train crew were busy on something. We had halted for a good 15 min and this would affect our punctuality. I couldn’t know what was the trouble but was relieved when we were up and running again. We skipped Vidisha next at 13.58 ie 40 kms in about 25 min or so meant we were back in business again.
Final leg of 53 kms we covered in 27 min (115 kmph+). To me it was the most relentless speedy run I had ever done or imagined. We entered BPL at 1425 with a delay of 20 min which was due to SR of 20 kmph, trailing Punjab Mail, 3 instances of slow runs, Halt at Matatila for 7 min and 15 min unscheduled halt at Ganj Basoda. Unitary method suggests that sometimes we did brilliantly than what we were scheduled to do and thats what made this train special.
I finally got out at BPL Pf1 and moved to pf2 for Amarkantak. From pf2 I admired the king as long as it was there and as long as I could see it after its departure.
Finally there was no fog, no major interruptions and Shatabdi had indeed lived upto its reputation. It had indeed delivered with aplomb what all I had expected and infact a bit more. I took this trip for pure railfanning spirits and hats of to the king for such a royal treatment.
It may be a routine for all the folks in making this run of 2002/1 possible and it may be nothing to other set of passengers but for a railfan it is the ultimate at present in IR. GM, WCR holding Additional charge of SECR then was on an inspection trip to SECR. On the day, he was inspecting Pendra Road (Between BSP and KTE). His inspection got over, his saloon was attached to the rear of our Chhattisgarh Sampark Kranti Express till Katni Murwara. So, I am encouraged to call our CGSK as GM special from Pendra Road to KTE! (I am not aware if this practice is prevalent in IR or not but I take the cue from the movie Airforce one.. wherein the US Prez in the movie makes a dramatic escape out of his actual Air force one and the plane in which he was received, Hercules C130 it was I guess, transmitted a message of changing its flight code from current to Air force one!)

Coming back, to make the run special and to add to the might of the GM special we had the white beauty of GZB with single dark red ribbon at the helm which superbly supplemented the all greens it got, effortlessly negotiating gradients, curves and snaking with the 23 coach load on the moonlit night. Needless to say with the GM riding the train, any interruptions, delays in the run were out of question..

As far as I remember correctly we had a timely departure from BSP. Me along with my brother and mom were at A1 near the rear end of the train. I had no idea that a ride with the GMs saloon was in store ahead. Everything was as usual with the negotiating of Khongsara Khodri ghats. Pendra Road is the first stoppage for CGSK after BSP. When Pendra Road arrived, I was surprised when we were admitted in pf2. Since passenger traffic is not that heavy in this single line stretch, normally up and down express trains are usually admitted in pf1. In all my runs through Pendra I have noticed my Utkal/CGSK being admitted in pf1 in both directions. The halt in pf2 of pendra went on and on. Curious I went to the door to find almost every head on the pf looking towards the rear of the train. Some shunting activity was going on. On enquiry, the attendant of our coach revealed that GMs saloon is being attached. Since the platform was not long for CGSK to accomodate completely, it ended just after our coach. All the UR passengers had to run beyond the pf to get in. This was one of the drawbacks of having a saloon attached. Had we got pf1, entire rake would have got in. Perhaps GM was more important for authorities than passengers!

As shunting was involved, the halt at Pendra Road was pretty long. Being winter days, it started getting dark by the time we were leaving Pendra. Meanwhile, some 3-4 railway personnel got into our bay. As i shared the bay I could hear some railway gossiping. I tell you, as a railfan I enjoyed it a lot! :-) Just as we were about to start, one of them chatted on his cellphone. As he was talking I could make out one of their colleagues was in the loco and he was chatting. With GMs saloon attached, are some senior officials also deployed in the loco? He asked jokingly "kitni der mein pahunchaoge katni GM sahab ko?" (How much time it will take for GM sir to reach Katni?) I was framing the thoughts of live coverage from that cab but alas that was not to be. Shunting completed, it was time for the Ghazi warrior to gallop ahead. We moved ahead. I am sure the entire Pendra staff would have sighed a breath of relief having sent off the GM!

One of them started reading TOI on his phone and shared the news item of WR removing PSRs that had appeared in the paper. All of them expressed surprise with the print media keeping track of PSR removal! I asked one of them sitting next to me about the MPS of the stretch. He answered "90". Then I asked if P4/P7 really made any improvement over the M4s in this stretch? He said "yes". He said WAM4 struggles with the CGSK load and a P4/P7 is much better. (I thought with all of IRFCA around, he would have made equal number of frnz and enemies with this fact!) Their gossiping continued with the peculiar observations made during the inspection. While I could feel that outside the CGSK was piercing the heartland at MPS. Whenever we had an SR, P7 would conjure up a magic in picking up. In the single line stretch till Anuppur, no loop line crossings, no slowdowns, no silly business. It was plane MPS riding!

We halted punctually at APR. From the door I could notice some activity near the saloon. From Anuppur, it was double line and P7 started rocking again. Amlai, Burhar were rocketed past in a flash and we sped towards our next halt Shahdol. At SDL the railway folks got down. Again the halt was precise and we moved ahead.

After SDL, the route is everything but straight. I headed to the door. The cool blast of wind was a touch discomforting but I didnt want to miss the stupendous night action. And boy I wasnt disappointed either. One of my best doorplating experiences! We flied past the landscape, obliging the greens. The panto spark and station tubelights which we were crossing in a flurry made the setting even more thrilling. The moments of the entire trip was the superbly, terrific non stop MPS run from Umaria to Katni. The Rupaund skip being the most fascinating. This station is on the curve. The train literally swayed as it negotiated the curve. Suddenly the tublights appeared out of the curve and went flashing by in a jiffy. In the process posing a brilliant display of lighting on the rake of the train. Peeping out of the door, I could say the experience was seriously fantastic!

Now came the critical moment. I was doing head and tail in my mind wether we would get a smooth entry into KMZ (Katni Murwara), without an irritating red in the NKJ yard courtsey us being the GM special or will the customary halt-before-you-go reception prevail. I had thought only if we get a perfect non stop entry into KMZ, I will believe the repute of GM! (A railfan's mind please.. ) My heartbeats started increasing as we were nearing NKJ. Soon the lights started appearing. I could not see the signals ahead, but we had slowed down a touch. We were not galloping now. My heart started sinking as I could sense the speed decreasing even further through the NKJ yard. I was almost cursing KMZ for not respecting their GM when I almost yelled in jubilation as I could see the ramp of KMZ! Which meant we had indeed crossed the KMZ yard without stopping although slowpaced but indeed a miracle nonetheless! But still I wanted completely unhindered entry into KMZ for the perfect reception and so we were granted! In royal style we were at 0 kmph at SDL pf and then we were 0 kmph again only at KMZ! No stopping in between. Now that was a truly GM special class run! Fast, non stop, all greens and mighty! The P7 ahead indeed made the experience even more enriching!

We shelled our GM special tag at KMZ with the shunter taking away the saloon to KTE. Now we were again just another train on the vast IR expanse! All the might of the dusk was squared up in the morning when we were held up before NZM countless times for overtakes! AP, KK, BCT Raj almost everyone overtook us at will!Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-83279947811361573172009-09-16T07:31:00.002-07:002009-09-16T07:32:01.970-07:00NZM-NGP-BSP, KSK, ShivnathI have been wishing to travel by this connection from NZM to BSP. Many reasons, first being I had never been to any other SK besides CGSK, second being I had never seen the JHS-BPL section in broad daylight, third I wanted to enjoy day time non stop run of SK. NZM-NGP with two commercial halts amply justified this wish.

As this was a hurriedly planned trip no time for any booking or anything. It was decided on Fri night that I have to leave for BSP on Sat. I first thought of Samta till R and then the first availabe train. But I settled for KSK-Shivnath link confident that even if I miss Shivnath, I can atleast catch Samta from NGP till R and proceed thereafter.

0530 on Sat reached NZM. Before this please allow me to describe Delhi so early in the morning. It had rained fully for the last two days and hence it mean a fresh surroundings. I strated from m place at Delhi Cantt to NZM. Barely managed to get an auto and he made full use of this opportnity for himself and charged 140 Rs! Left with no other auto in sight I obliged and w went through the green turned greener cantonment area.. through to Daula Kuan and it was jammed!! 5 in the morning is no time for a traffic jam but still Dhaula Kuan was jammed!! Lots of trucks n the closed left cloverleaf for Ring Road towards Motibagh was the reason. Finally the auto moved out and into the NDMC area. What a scene and what a run. Terrefic, the Delhi roads looked and felt awesome. The roundabouts the sodium lights all were really captivating.

Well finally touched into NZM at 0540 or so. Went to the "Current Reservation Counter" at pf 1 (old entrance, non-comesum one) and asked for accomodation in KSK. He happily gave me a berth without charging anything extra not even the Tatkal fare!! My name was listed in a saperate chart. The train was quite empty but I was not aware that such a facility exists, I just went for askance.

Then I went to UTS counter (near Comesum) to ask for a NGP-BSP ticket but I was denied!! I thought its possible to get a ticke from anwhere to anywhere under UTS. Anyways went in to catch the arivals. Prominently SBC Raj came in at Pf3 with LGD-P4 and few min later GT with a LGD P4!! (ED??) Thirukkural Exp to CAPE left with AJJ WAP1 and my KSK was to be hauled by AJJ WAM4..

I settled in a near empty train expecting a decent non stop run. We started on time and halted right on top of THE NALLAH!! Pillars are coming over it any idea what are they for? We moved after a good 10 min and stopped again at Ballabhgarh. Till then it was a decent run. After that we moved swiftly out of Palwal and other wayside stations. We crossed MTJ at a good speed (more than 20kmph), good speed coz CGSK crosses painfully slow and doesnt gives the impression of SKIPPING the station..:-) AK Raj was on pf2, i missed its loco but SAIL ads were prominently seen!!

Again a decent non stop run till AGC where we crawled. Met Kerela bound for NDLS with LGD P4! Where are all EDs gone?? Again I was wondering where it got this? ERS?

Chambal was crossed at a good speed and we went through GWL uninterrupted. Menawhile PC guys served Egg Cury Paratha for 50 Rs!! Saw beautiful curves which I had earlier seen only in moonlight. Crossed Punjab Mail somewhere led by a GZB P1 (guesing from the livery). Datia came and went. And so did other stations. We reached JHS on time at pf2. Chhattigarh Exp bound for ASR was leaving from Pf5 and APSK bound for NZM was entering Pf3. Chhattisgarh with a GZB P4 and APSK with a LGD P4. Crew change means I cud enjoy ever delicious Shreekhand. AJJ Wammie was doing well with (half empty) 23 coach load. Heap of HCPVs.

The station that interested me most was Babina. We halted there for a good 10 min and by the people standing around in the pf I could guess it has got a big cantonement area. An almost exclusive military siding confirmed this. Green liveried military train was standing there. Punjab mail (trailing us) and Jhelum (to NZM)
were announced. We crossed Lalitpur non stop which came later than I expected.

We proceded on our way to BINA and I could see the under construction Bina refinery at a distance on Right side. Crossed Bina with a halt and through the small ghats to BPL. I was expecting BPL Shat for NDLS in full speed when I saw a few greens on the other trck. But I was disappointed to see it standing midway!! The loco staff were down probably inspecting something.

We were 20 min late into BPL's pf 1. After BPL the run which I always enjoy the most. Ghats, green and curvy. Narmada, Hoshangabad all really make a mesmerising evening. Budhni Ghats are a treat always and so is Maramjhiri-Dharakho h. Before the latter we halted into ET. And as we were moving in Amarkantak to Durg (via KTE) was moving towards KTE. ET ELS was crowded with many locos. But distinct was one shining GZB beauty. I forgot its road number but it was shining and GZB for sure.

Encountered GT just before entering Hoshangabad thankfully with a ED P4 this time. Dusk and night settled in as I plugged in my MP3 player. We looked on course for a timely NGP arrival and I was confident of catching Shivnath. We pulled into NGP within 5-10 min of scheduled Arrival time. Aha good old NGP. A nice place to be always. The cute little NG train was ready for departure. Passengers were all set. First time I saw an NG train at night and it was a pretty sight indeed.

I moved to the UT counters for a ticket upto BSP. I asked a TTE at gate if I could find the staff for Shivnath (I hoped that a lot of berths d be empty). But it was not to be! The guy directed me to the Duty room of TTEs and the TTE there told me the train is packed! I asked him if any chance for a berth enroute. He asked me to check after Kamptee. As soon as I said OK he asked to give a fine amount 313 Rs. (SL price is 187 Rs around I guess). I asked what for and he replied I will be travelling SL with a UR ticket. I said I have not even stepped in the train!! He got busy with another passenger and I managed to sneak out. I didnt wish to get involved with him coz if UR is crowded I will have to ask for an SL once again.

So I thought let the train arrive and see the UR condition. If its manageable I will go in it otherwise go to TTE once again. The train arrived late. (It comes in as 2855 BSP-NGP i/c and leaves as Shivnath). The transition of crowd was noteworthy. like DMRC's Rajeev Chowk!! But strangely once the 2855 folks cleared the place the UR looked relatively empty!! I managed to get a window side seat although I entered the coach last! We moved out well after our scheduled departure time. Halted at Itwari.. (pf6??) I slept after that only to be awake at G and later Durg. But the passengers only alighted and noone boarded the train.

I doubt if even SL was this much empty!! Reached BSP around 45 min late. Loco was BIA Wam 4.

This was one of the trips taken at a shortest noticeAbhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-91740846355253719722009-09-16T07:31:00.001-07:002009-09-16T07:31:59.438-07:00NZM-NGP-BSP, KSK, ShivnathI have been wishing to travel by this connection from NZM to BSP. Last post was perhaps in the Lalu era. Somehow the railfanning took a loop line and couldnt get a proceed from there. Now finally it seems that the "clear" has been given and the notches are on the way up.

I had to do a NZM-BSP-NDLS round trip sometime in the second week of june. As the student life is over and so is the training, the professional life is demanding tight schedules. So much so that I was tempted to take a flight, something which I have not done till now. But somewhere deep down the railfan prevails... which tempted me to take the Great Indian Railway once again. So as it turned out to be, I had work in office till 1230 in Delhi on Thursday and had to reach Raipur rather 100 kms away from Raipur as soon as possible on Friday for a family function. Options avalable Rajdhani at 2040 from NDLS or Gondwana at 1530 hrs from NZM. I decided for the latter.

Due to last minute programme I managed a sleeper class tatkal confirmed ticket in an otherwise packed train. The ticket indicated Side Lower.I was excited. But the June heat was really threatening. It was literally boiling hot inside the comprtment as the rake moved in pf 4 of NZM. The honours went to a BSL wammie. We started on time and picked up decent speeds till outskirts of FBD. But the run was not smooth. It was marred by some slowing down and even halt. Meanwhile the sun baked the rake relentlessly and was in no mood of mercy. Just as we were about to enter Palwal we came to a grinding halt. But surprsingly the clouds made their presence felt and first relief from the heat. But sooner I realised that its almost 20 min now and my sole purpose o taking this train was to reach Raipur on time! ! The halt stretched to 40 min still no sign of any chance of moving ahead. Meanwhile TVC Rajdhani went towards NZM. This brought a sense of relief that at least section ahead is clear. But why on earth were we not moving?? I thought of a loco failure. By now all my thoughts of the train reaching Raipur in time had evaporated. Since I was traveling alone I decided against leaving my luggage unattended and walking to the loco.

Evening was setting in and I had a mixed feeling of excitement and frustration. Excitement coz it was now almost certain that we will be overtaken by both the Mumbai bound Rajdhanis and frustration coz it meant more delay!! Anyways I kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the train to move ahead!! Like a blessing came the now familiar horns of BSL wammie!! Familiar coz if the coach is in the front half of the rake we usually recognize the honking wether this is our train or not. And this time it was unmistakably our Wammie which was whisteling loud of its departure. But I admit my mind was now focussed on the crossing of the Rajdhanis. Just as we entered in loop line of Hodal I jumped out of my seat armed with my N73 for my first video ever of the mighty couples.

By the time we halted the main line signals were already showing "clear" for the mighty BCT Raj. I was amazed by the proximity to which the Rajdhani was following us. Barely a couple of minutes and came the horn of the king. The crowd of our train which was by now in the platform looked in anticipation. And in she came in the full glory with WAP7 with horns blaring, obliging the clear ahead with the elegant red LHB coaches. It was not a thundering speed but sufficient enough to make arailfan's day!!
http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=hvjMjcWMFp8
The advance starter at Hodal turned Red then immediately to amber and again proceed in quick succession and this time it was for the deputy. And again within a couple of minutes came August Kranti Rajdhani Express with a BRC WAP4 matching neck to neck in elegance with its predecessor.
http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=31lDK6ctTTI
It really feels satisfying to see these kind of scenes up close. By now after this much action I was totally absorbed in the railfanning fever and was hoping for Paschim to make its presence felt as well.. :-).. But soon I returned to practical world when I again heard the familiar loud honk. We were more than an hour late now.

After Hodal till MTJ and beyond the run was steady. We met AK Raj again at MTJ. Raj was in pf 2 and we were in pf1. It started as soon as we came 2 a halt. The pleasant evening had now turned to a warm night and again there were no signs of temperatures decreasing. Such was the condition that as soon as the train stopped I was awake. I coul literally feel the summer in the night!! Anyways I tried to sleep just thinking that the train will cover something at night (the most general perception I'd say..:-))..

The morning was pleasant however but I was waiting desperately for NGP!! But I soon realised there is some time left in reaching there when we entered Betul at around 0620.. still 40 min delayed. We made a decent morning run amid Multai Pandhurna Narkher etc. The temperatures again started becoming uncomfortable as the day progressed. But I was now worried because it was another 100 kms after Raipur that I had to travel. But the train really ran well against my predictions and we managed to stroll into NGP by 0930 or so still delayed. Although 30 min delay is not a big deal partticularly after the hour long halt before palwal but I was worried about the things to come. 0900 hours means NGP is choked with superfast trains bound for BSP. What priority we will get remained to be seen.

We were taken in Pf 5. The BSL wammie reversed and prepared itself for the final portion of its journey. Porbandar Howrah Exp was adjacent to us ready with a P4 and I had all the reasons in the world to believe that it will move ahead of us. But something good again happened not for the first time in the trip that we got a go ahead and the BSL Wammie now proceeded comfortably with tiny 13 coach load towards Raigarh. What followed after this was something that I am yet to experience even in the Rajdhani!! I have always lamented the stretch for delays and all. But this was probably the day when SECR guys decided to show me their might!!

We rolled off NGP at 1015 or may be a bit later. I was by now interested in minute by minute records of the train. The train really did awesome speeds through Kamptee/Kanhan/ Chacher/Salwa etc till Bhandara. The LPs were realy charged up folks and the section controllers really complemented them with au literally free of uscheduled halts!! By Bhandara the attitude of LPs were pretty clear. As soon as we got the proceed signal we again notched up aggressively. The wayside stations really flashed by and we did some continuous runs of pretty good speeds and more importantly without any obstruction. We reached Gondia and thanks to the fantastic run we had not aggravated our delay. Rather we were on the course for better.

What followed after Gondia left me spellbound. The setting was like high day tmperatures, I was near the gate charging the phone and simultaeously listening some numbers. The combination of heat and speed of the train forced me not to open the door. The mini ghat section before Dongargarh/Amgaon all were crossed in a flash. I really didnt realise and we had left Dongargarh/Rajnandg aon and were on our way to Durg. I was expecting Durg at around 1400 hrs. But the train made good use of slack available between Rajnandgaon and Durg and we swiftly crossed Rasmara/Murhipaar Sivnath and marched into Durg beforetime 1315 hrs!!Full 5 min beforetime. Nothing strange but after halting at Palwal for a hour and letting the Rajdhanis pass, I guess this deserved some accolade!!

We waited till 1330 and again started for Raipur. I was praying for this kind of run to continue till Raipur as well and so it happened!! Again at Raipur we were almost 5 min ahead of time. I thanked the LPs the section controllers and sprinted towards the bus stand for a bus to Ghari Chowk and further to my destination! !It was indeed a satisfying run that changed my notion that a SF can indeed make up lost time between NGP and Durg!! Beware Rajdhani, my expectations from you next time will be much higher.. :-))

The return journey was a more steady yet unusual affair. Unusual because for the first time I took the Howrah-BSP-NDLS Rajdhani Exp which means for the first time I took it from pf2. So accustomed I was to see it depart from pf 6.. Changing times.. I'd say.. Well, by the time I reached the station the train was already in the pf so cant comment on the occupancy prior to BSP but there were a few gentlemen in my coach who looked like coming all the way from Howrah.
http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=KENex52UeIY
In this link you can enjoy the Rajdhani crossing Betul at a pretty good speed. Thanks for patient reading... What great times they were. There were many facets of the U-Spl travel. Blessed I feel to be part of that grp coz civil 2k4 had the majority presnce in uspl frm south delhi. And the guys who made up the group was worth studying as a subject in itself. Allow me to describe the sequence on different days. Best for me were the days of the start of the year (not 2005/6/7 n 8!!). coz no one had got his room and the grp used to be in full strength. "You need to be at the stop @ 7:40 to be sure that you catch the bus" sandy told me 3 years back. His advice came after much thought as usual. He had seen me missing the bus often and repenting it later. It was 7 minutes walk for me from my home to u-spl stop. But often the walk was fearful, not for anything else but for Sandy's mis call!! Coz wenevr it came it meant that I missed the bus. But things were not that bad either. More often than not I was there on time to have the best of times. If there was a cricket match the previous day (international or DCE level), it WAS to be THE point of discussion for the next one hour. Prime participants Bhatti, Akash, Kunal, Pratyaksh, myself as per the presence. One fine morning even Mr Kirar was there from Jamnapaar!! and later Mr Lahiri joined the group too!! For the rest of the days, it was timepass discussion as usual. The crowd in our bus stop varied with days with monday being the greenest. But as the years progressed everydays started becoming the mondays.. :-).. on other days people were scarce. The prime feature of monday was the number of people and moreso the number of bags. The only saving grace was the better occupied ladeej seats. And yeah, often one could see Mr Samant sitting by the side of window on the first/second or third seat ahead of conductors'. Occupying seats on Mondays was the herculean task. Sandy as ususal was quick to realize this and shifted his base to the earlier stop!! Clever by a yard indeed.. Anyways, somehow we used to settle and start our chatter. Moti bagh came and the bus used to get more occupied. By Dhaula Kuan Mr Nehra used to make his great entry. After Dhaula Kuan it used to be a breezy run amid the woods on the empty road. Apart from Mondays, guuys used to become more steady now. Hooked in with their head sets or some novel or norman lewis. The bus used to pick some really good speeds and on some empty days it used to become the case of parts vibrating like anything!! However the most interesting part was for the person who had missed the bus. The top slot for bus-missing would come to either me or akash.. and then started the most tricky task of catching the bus back before punjabi bagh!! A race against time which needed military planning, strategy and time keeping. One faulty decision and you wont be at punjabi bagh on time. It looked like an eternity to reach p. bag sans u spl. Superselector, gizmos have been the popular points of discussions throughout the journey. Rohit used to be immersed in sleep :-), me, nehra and akash in tikki waali bets or match discussion. with sandy it feels like spending an eternity in bus. Eggjactly at 8.10 with an error of +5 min, the bus used to come at a screeching halt in patel ngr and enter the scene Mr KT!! On days other than mondays my dose for life coz otherwise the rest of the journey 'd ve been dull. KT used to come, get the chord done and 95 fm starts humming. On the days when 2k4 civil grp was big, everyone now was deeply absorbed in chitter chatter and on other days it was the case of novels n fm. Come Karampura and enter Mr. Kirar!!! By now every pj was treated with full hearted laughter. At punjabi bagh, we often got the opportunity to see special creatures which later became president of college!! Also it used to become clear if the missing fellow was to catch u spl or not! The density also often increased. By the time the u spl turned a smooth left at Wazirpur, it used to be 0835. Hayat to Wazirpur was possible in 35 min flat only in u spl. By the side of metro we breezed through to Kohat to Madhuban Chowk. By now often the u spl used to be pack to the brim. This is when the seated persons realize how comfortable they are! Nuts and bolts at the door ensured that the guy at the gate would get the morning attendance!! Vivek, sumit Oberoi often wud ve stepped in the bus by now. Now the u spl became a commuter bus. It is like a long journey before Mad C and short commuting sprint after that. By now the chat becomes more college oriented. The left turn to the Rohini Depot 2 and breezing through the Sector 17/16 and making sure that we were at college gate by 0858!! 2 more min for class!! People used to climb the bus even at the college gate to have a ride till the roundabout in front of admin!! The best part was the ticket checking at the stop just before college!! Once the checkers entered inside the college with the bus!! It is not that the bus reached Hayatt on time.. many a times it came late but then we had the awesome fantastic run via naraina!! Me, sandy, akki and prat used to track the time taken from Hayatt to wazirpur and it was in stark contrast with that of good old mudrika!! I dont know what you guys might be feeling by now but I really feel missed out in the morning! The boring bus ride to office.. I really mis the u spl, the atmosphere,, the crowd, the V factor (sandy, akki, kt n nehra r u reading).. It really used to be a picture perfect begining for the day... The days were even more fantastic during exams with the grace of the GOD himself from patel nagar metro stn! Endless discussions, last min revision ohh sorry first time seeing the topic used to be the order of the day!! How can me, sandy n prat can forget the bearing issue!! (it was in the rtv though but still..) At the end of it I wonder why is it all gone!! I am sure I have missed lots of things. It was 4 yrs of bonding which I have written in just a mail... Still wonder wether those days will come back again.. Missing the best times of my life...Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-52289684863417818652009-01-20T01:21:00.001-08:002009-01-20T01:21:52.093-08:00Visit to NZM, Jan 20 2009Went to NZM today morning to attend for AP Express. And the observations are as under.

1) Pf tickets again unavailable. The notice shows that tickets will be unavailable for the duration 6 Jan to 31 Jan. If NR has a plan to not issue the pf tickets throughout the year they can do so with a clear notice in the news paper and having a special arrangement for needy persons. (Ladies, Sr Citizen, Handicapped etc..) In the present scenario, a guy who had to see off his wife for the afternoon Gondwana Exp, came in the morning to have a written permission beforehand to enter the station!!! He came with the ticket of his wife. The station staff refused him!!

2) Empty rake of Bhopal Exp at Pf 4 with WAP7 30214.

3) Golden Temple Mail at Pf2. Led by BRC WAP 4 22280. This train had a very long halt at NZM. It was there before I entered the station and was there till I left with hardly any signs of departure!! This gets a loco change here too??

4) Smart looking Wammie from BSL 21236was incharge of the Mangla Exp bound for ERS. It was to depart from Pf3.

5) JBP/RIG combine Gondwana Exp was at pf 6. This is the first time I saw the RIG bound Gondwana Exp.

6) AP Exp for NDLS came in at Pf 5 with LGD WAP4. It came in at 0930. My father came in this train from NGP. He told me that AP came 15-20 min before time at NGP.

7) ICF rake of NZM-DDN AC Spl was idling in second line from pf 3.

8) CGSK from Durg was announced. Pf 7 was empty for its reception.

Construction activity at Pf1 side were still on. Some glassy shining structure was appearing. Looks like NZM will become a very good looking station once this renovation is over.Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-57509519932860546872008-12-21T00:44:00.000-08:002008-12-21T00:45:10.689-08:00ERN-MAS in 2696 on 12 Dec 08After 100 long days in Kerela, the day finally came back when I was to return to Delhi. My plan of travel was to take 2696 TVC-MAS Exp from ERN on 12th thereby reaching MAS on 13th at 0945 Hrs. From MAS, I was to take Rajdhani for NZM on 14th morning.

We were a group of 5 all bound for Delhi. We reached ERN (Ernakulam Town) at 2030 hrs. As we entered the pf, GHY-TVC Exp made exit from pf 2 with a WAM4(may be from AJJ). Some construction work is in progress in pf 1 side. The coach positions were written by hand by a lady on the board for the trains to be departed from pf1. The display boards were not functioning.

ERS Guruvayur passenger led by 14030 ERS WDM came in pf 1. Next to arrive in pf 2 was HYD-Kollam spl Exp led by a WAG7 from LGD. It was a 17/18 coach rake and shined under the tube lights of the station. Well for those who have never been to ERN, the station has only two pfs saperated by two pit lines. It has a pretty steep curve on the Aluva side. The curve starts midway in the pf and the curve is such that the end is not visible.

A light Ed WAP4 strolled through the first pit line from pf 1 towards Aluva. Soon after I realised why as at 2100 hrs the JAT bound CAPE-JAT Himsagar Exp came in pf 1 led by ERS WDM3A. The loco was changed to the ED WAP4.

After a loong wait, at 2215 hrs, 2696 came with AJJ WAP4 incharge. The coah positioning as mentioned in that board finally turned out to be false as the AC 2 and AC 3 coaches were messed up. Normally the coach configuration should be 2 nos AC 2 tier coaches together and then 2 nos AC 3 tier coaches. But here it was alternate. With heaps of luggage, we had to make hurry to board the train. Our coach A2 was of very old make. Infact it was of the age of 2 coaches per bay type. The inside was also warm.

After saying goodby to the airport at Aluva which looks majestic at night we reached Thrissur at 2325 Hrs. I went to sleep tired after half the day in refinery.

Strangely, at ED, which came an hour and a half late, I spotted that this train has an FC too but there is no mention of it in TAAG!! Well at 0800 hrs we reached JTJ and I spotted a MGS WAG7.

At 0830 Hrs, MAS-MYS 2007 Shat sped past towards MYS with AJJ WAM4. The rake was 11 coach out of which first two were tat indicom while rest all were conventional ICF coaches.

At 0910 we were standed in Katpadi and strangely enough 21373 ET WAM4 led MAs bound Shatabdi crossed us!! I guess this must be an off link.

At 1100 hrs, deep into MAS suburb, I spotted a WR marked MRVC rake which I had mentioned in my arlier report as well... A WAG9 was also spotted.

1110 Hrs, we entered into MAS. The only purpose was to visit some relatives in MAS and roam around till 0610 hrs the next day!!

Additional: (On MAS Suburban System)

I got a chance to hop in to the Chennai local trains. I had to travel from Park Stn to St Thomas Mount. I really enjoyed the experience. I mean it was really good to have locals running there otherwise I wouldnt have dreamt of reaching TG Nagar so easily from Central!! Also got the opportunity to see Chennai Egmore with many rakes stabled there. The train breezed through Saidapet, Guindy and all and reched St Thomas Mount. THe rush in the train was thin. (Probably for the odd hours of 1300 hrs). But it made for a splendid ride in Local train!!!Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-3521466434181559182008-12-20T23:57:00.000-08:002008-12-20T23:58:33.536-08:00Visit TO NZM on 20/12/2008Yesterday (20/12/08) went to NZM to see off my relative on 2410 Gondwana Exp bound for BSP. Scheduled Dep time 1525 Hrs.

Reached NZM at 1500 hrs. Rather late due to auto-rickshaw menance in Delhi. The renovation work on NZM is still on and the station is being double-storeyed. Sale of Pf ticket was off till 31/12 so I had to take a ticket to FBD. The ticket counter guys have now an attitude that if you ask a ticket till New Delhi, they will refuse you as they think that you will be using it as a pf ticket. Nonetheless, I couldnt restrain myself from entering the station and had to take FBD ticket. (In the meantime on the adjacent counter a lady started quarelling with the counter guy who refused to give her the pf ticket. A scene was building up with other passengers in the queue wanting tickets for trains which were to depart within next 20 min or so).

Inside the station, 2410 was scheduled to depart from pf 4. The rake had already been shunted in by the time we reached down the FOB. New Display boards are being installed in NZM though they were not operational yet. Mahakoshal Exp was in Pf 5. Gondwana was a combo rake of BSP as well as JBP bound portions. (Parting in BINA).

TVC - NZM Raj rake was stationed in the pit line adjacent to pf 4. The rake was all branded. "Cheetah" brought in the Jaynagar-NZM GR Rake in the second pit line adjacent to pf 4.

The 2410 departed at 1530 hrs. After its departure as I was moving out of the station, saw an LHB rake stationed in pf7. It was headed by a WAP1 (most probably 22047 if I recall correctly) and had two AC FIrst coaches!!! First time in my life I had seen two 1AC coaches in a train!!

Had to leave the station early due to some important work. But it is always nice as usual to be in NZM!!

By the way, if we have an MST, then we can move into the pf inhibited I guess... Just curious..Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-18743421095905105352008-10-07T04:40:00.000-07:002008-10-07T04:41:32.517-07:00ERN-MAS &back.... planned and executed within 2 hrs!!!!The Kochhi trip is growing on for adventures!! Apart from a late evening visit to Cherai beach and Munnar, many of us were interested to go to MAS (Chennai). It was just a wish and we were not sure whether it will materialize or not. The toughest part was to get two days continuous leave.

So it happened at 1715 hrs on 30th sep in Kochhi refinery that we somehow managed to ask our senior for leave on 1st oct. As 2nd was already a national holiday means we will get our 2 days leave. Our senior who happens to be a very very nice and co-operating gentleman gave us leave on 1st. And at 1730 hrs we finalized our plans (4 of us) that we will be going to Chennai tonight!!! No reservations nothing but still we decided. We knew that we had trains departing from Ernakulam Town (ERN) at 1915 hrs and 2145 hrs. 1915 hrs train was 2624 TVC-MAS sf mail. And 2145 train was TVC-MAS SF Exp. 2624 looked out of question but we thought of giving it a chance. At 1800 hrs we reached back to hotel. We then made necessary calls to inform concerned people about our flash trip!! All were surprised.

1830 we left our hotel (in Tripunithura) for ERN. 1910 hrs we reached ERN thanks to the gladiatoric driving of our auto driver. He managed his way through the evening Kochhi traffic somehow. I asked the Enquiry and got the response that our 1915 train is announced. One of us lined himself for the Unreserved tickets. At 1918 train entered the pf 1 and at 1920 we managed to buy our tickets. We first ran to GS coaches but they were damn full. Then we made our way to SL coaches and found a TTE in pf. We told him that due to shortage of time we were not able to get tickets. He asked for the penalty charges and we readily gave him that. He asked us to be in S5. 30 min into the run and he allotted us berth nos 73, 74, 75, 76 of S5!!!

We simply couldn’t believe what has happened!! Such berths we don’t get even if we book 1 month in advance!!! The berth availability made the run even more enjoyable. The train was SMBed (at least S4 and S5) and had a CBC rake. This was the first time I was sitting in a CBC rake and it gave real bad jerks!!! Whenever the train started or stopped it felt like I was in a freight train!!!

We had our dinner from the pantry and at 2045 hrs we reached Thrissur. We were taken in pf 2 for 5 min. At 2210 hrs we reached Palakkad. We were in pf 3 and I can easily say that it is one of the cleanest stations I have seen. Meanwhile 6344 bound for ERN came to adjacent pf. It reversed there.(?).

The run was full of curves. There are indeed a lot of curves in this stretch!!! I slept for sometimes and woke up when train was in Erode at 0053 hrs. Salem was the next stoppage and one of my friends had to get down there so I decided not to sleep. The run till salem was nonstop and fast. We started Salem at 0146!!!! Before Salem I saw a paper factory and a temple above the hill ata a distance. The light coming from there made a very good scene.

After Salem I retired to sleep and wake up only when we were crossing through Arakkonam at 0525. At 0625 AJJ WAM4 led partial Tata Indicom Shatabdi crossed us. At 0635 saw a WR marked MRVC Rake!!!!

We entered into MAS right time!! This train is really punctual….

I noticed this again when we were to return from MAS to ERN by the same train. We had WL128-130!!! Miraculously indeed it got confirmed which resulted in me having a side lower berth!!! Again the departure frm MAS at dot 2000 hrs and reached Tripunithura (after ERN) at 0705!!!!!

Except for CBC couplings, this train is fantastic… I don’t lame SMBs coz probably it was because of them only that we got berths!!!!

First time I saw a Terminus station in the form of Chennai Central…. Liked the look of it… It was a different experience to see ED WAP4 resting at a dead end!!! I mean it was a really different feeling. I don’t how many of you would support this weird thought but still…….

Thanks a lot for reading…. Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-88183646751250526292008-10-07T04:34:00.000-07:002008-10-07T04:38:31.280-07:00NZM-ERS in 2432 TVC Rajdhani Exp!!!Finally the morning of Aug 31 came for which the wait seemed to be like ages. It was the very same day when I was to take 2432 Nizamuddin-Trivendrum Rajdhani Express for my journey from NZM to Ernakulam. The train was scheduled to depart from NZM at 1100 hrs. Thanks to the Sunday morning traffic of Delhi, I reached NZM at around0945 hrs. From the enquiry(Sarai Kale Khan side) I enquired about the pf and the lady answered pf 5. As I was descending the stairs of pf 5, Hirakund Exp bound for VSKP made a steady exit from pf 5. Pf 6 was occupied by Bhopal Exp and KSK was in Pf 7. Few minutes later the Bhopal Exp was shunted out. The rush on the station was reasonable considering the measures like "Not issuing the pf tickets" were in place.

At 0955 hrs, 22540 WAP4 of BRC also Rajhans brought in BDTS-NZM GR at pf 6. To see such a beautiful loco first up, I thought an ominous sign before the mammoth 42 hrs journey!! The A5 of TVC Raj was supposed to be at the end, and as I later turned out, our coach was third from the end. I was wishing that we will get a non-airtel rake. All my wishes came down to a crash landing when I spotted an Airtel Rajdhani rake making slow progress towards NZM from NDLS side. I don't know why but somehow I forgot to note down the road number of the loco. But it was customary WAP 4 of BRC. The rake was 17 coach, first time I had been inside such a looong Rajdhani rake.

The rake was Loco-EOG-B1 to B8-PC-A1 to A5-H1-EOG.

Now a few things about the airtel rake….
1) Neat red carpeting near the main door as well as over the interconnection between bogies.
2) Room freshner (2 or 3 nos) in each coach.
3) Liquid soap in the wash basin and in the toilet.
4) 6 odd safaiwalas for the whole train.
5) Airtel ads and airtel pamphlets inside the train.
6) Vinyl coating outside.

Airtel has got nothing to do with rest of the services except for payment. BUT these airtel stickers on the rake completely take away the charm of sitting in the Rajdhani. The imposing livery of Raj was much better than this idiotic idea. The concept would have been much much better had they spared the windows. Well, we moved out of NZM and it was a brisk exit. We quickly accelerated to good speeds after TKD. Kindly bear with me for not mentioning the speeds (100kmph, 130 kmph etc) as I was not having any tool nor am I expert in guessing speeds. But when I say very high speed, I really mean it!! 1135 hrs, we crossed Jhelum Exp at a station.(AST I think). At 1140, a GR sped towards NZM.

I was surprised when at 1235 hrs we crossed MTJ Goods cabin!! I expected MTJ some 15-20 min later. We made a 1 min halt there. 27110 Ajni WAG7 led freight was in the station. As we accelerated out of MTJ, I grew curious as it was the first time that I was going towards Bharatpur instead of AGC!!! It felt good to say bye bye to AGC bound tracks. At 1300 hrs we crossed Bharatpur. Lunch was served just after that and it was very good. After my harrowing experience in BSP Rajdhani this came as a pleasant surprise. On the visibility from inside, it is reduced and it takes time to adjust. For the start the view from the opposite window was better than my own window!!! Till 1400 hrs the excellent high speed run continued. At 1405 hrs, we crossed Gangapur city. At 1525 hrs we crossed a three AC coach train headed by a WAP4. The run was really awesome.

1529 hrs, we rached Kota and were taken in pf 2. A train was exiting from pf 3, but I don't rcollect its whereabouts now. Spotted twin RTM diesels strolling light and the JS rake. We were in Kota till 1550 and it felt nice to climb down on the pf and have a walk!! An hour later I went to the gate to enjoy the speedy run. One thing tht I noted was that the distance between the up and down tracks is very large and that too for very long distance. No complaints however as it offers a very good view of trains going in opposite directions. It was a real good experience to be in the unexplored territory. We crossed Nagda and then came the Chmbal river!! It came quite unnoticed and unexpectedly!! In the AGC-GWL section, it is sandwitched between the famous Chambal ghats but here it just came. The speed limit over Chambal bridge is 120 kmph. We crossed Ratlam nonstop and met Swaraj (bound for Delhi). It was headed by a BRC WAP4.

As the sun made its exit for the day, I too went inside. H journey till now was really memorable and the train live dupto its reputation for nonstop high speed run. After dinner, I laid down in my berth waiting for BRC. We reached BRC at 2230. That was when I came across the sight for which I was waiting for ages!! The sight of a WCAM!! And the one I saw was WCAM2P which came in just after us with the AK Raj at the pf adjacent to us. The roaring of the generators of both the trains was something too much for the ears!! At 2246 we moved out of BRC and BRC-Mumbai SF was in another pf led by blue coloured DC loco 21813 (not sure) was its number.

After a wonderful day in the TVC Raj I thought of having a good sleep… afterall it was my only journey which was going to last 2 nights!!And not to mention the excitement of seeing KR next morning… Last thing I wanted was to miss the first glimpse of the majestic KR!!! Let me take the moment to thank IRFCA members for reminding me what to notice… I tried my best to catch a glimpse of as many beautiful sights I could but frankly speaking everything that came my way kept me hooked and all of it looked so special!!

It was at 05.40 AM when I woke up and we were at Panvel. Half an hour off the scheduled time but who minds..:-). And surprisinglythe morning tea was served!!1 Ay any standards 5.30 AM is too early to serve the morning tea!!! Well no worries…. I enjoyed the unfolding beauty from my seat only for sometimes and after half an hour or so I went to the gate…. I was really thrilled at the feeling of going through one of the most majestic terrains on IR. The first station that came to my sight was ROHA and few minutes later a board welcomed me into KR!!

As the time progressed we were swallowed in tunnels and our time inside the tunnels kept on increasing!!! I mean these are really hugeeee tunnels!!! It takes soo much time to cross them.. A WDMX in front, then an EOG and the roar of an EOG just one coach later inside a tunnel that lasts for over a couple of minutes is something I had never experienced before!!! The smell of diesel coming out brings a somewhat scary feelings!! Many many a times it felt like is there going to be light again or will we be in this darkness only!! And amazingly one after the other tunnels… ohh my God I just cant imagine how they dared to build such a route…

As I have freshly become an Engg, and tht too a civil engg my mind just couldn’t cease to admire the executors of this project…. Sucha difficult terrain and add to it the excessive seepage!!! I have never seen seepage earlier nor I could have imagined that it could be that heavy!!! I mean at some places it was as heavy as rains… It would have surely been a worthy effort to build all the water-drainage systems… All the tunnels were generally unlined.. (most of them.. kindly confirm).. and at least thrice I saw the tunnel preceeded by a waterfall…. There were so many tunnels and they continued till the evening and into the night as well till I went inside!!!

At 1100 hrs we started from Ratnagiri and were held up at Sangameshwar road for crossing of LTT bound GR. The best part of many stations of KR is there are tunnel on both the ends of many of them!!! A good sight to see the train coming out of it…1200 hrs.. we were held up again at Vilavade for crossing of LTT bound Netravati Exp. We were again held up at 1229 hrs and 1405 hrs, the latter for freinght crossing. We waited for JS at Kudal.

1508 hrs we waited at Sawantwadi Road for Marusagar Exp. I liked these crossings. Feels good inbetween to see people between tunnels!!! By now I was desperately waiting for Madgaon to come!! I was kinda bored from the tunnels…. We finally reached Madgaon and I again had a light stroll in the pf. The pf was crowded and we left from there at 1640 hrs a good 2 hrs behind schedule!!!
The run through the rest of the evening is something that I would never forget. The terrain is soooo beautiful.. I love the sights and sounds of the loco.. the smoke the lush greenery, the surroundings… all contributed to an arresting atmosphere… really it was the run of my life.. the best ever I had till date… Mild rains added to the charm and the tunnels that came now felt even more refreshing… the road that follows the track, the houses.. the fields… occasional bridges.. the setting was really superb./… even the stations that came.. Kanute, Karwar etc… I liked them a lot…

After it was dark and it was clear that nothing will be visible I went inside…. Actually we were held in a stn at 1920 for 20 min or so… The delay in reaching udupi means dinner was delayed as the PC staff informed that Rotis (Paranthas) are to be loaded from Udupi. With the beautiful sights and long tunnels still in my mind, I again went to sleep as I had to get up early morning and prepare myself for a grueling day in the refinery!!

When I got up in the morning we were at Thrissur. We were late by an hour or so while reaching ERS, Ernakulam Jn. We were taken in pf1 and we crossed non-stop through Aluva, Angamali for Kaladi and Ernakulam Town (ERN). Can somebody enlighten me why is a “for” inbetween “Angamali” and “Kaladi”? What dose these words mean?

All in all my longest journey in TVC Rajdhani from NZM to ERS was a very enthralling and memorable experience. A high speed non-stop electric run under wires on day 1 and a scenic ride amid mountains ravines and clouds with a smoke on a single line on day 2. For me the two diametrically opposite types of run and I got full experience of both in the same journey. Forgot to mention the Karbude Tunnel and Panval viaduct!! Well Karbude tunnel was just tooooooooo looong….. It literally felt like there is not gonna b day again!!!

I would really like to share the group that I am enjoying Kerela to the fullest. The state is really really beautiful and Kochhi I find the city as very serene, easy paced. But it closes too early (before 8 pm) and the buses really run like they are going to kill u!!! But for the scenic beauty I am really enjoying it. Its one month here and I am having an experience of a lifetime.

Well thanks a lot for patient reading.Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-3431822297286868542008-08-22T10:32:00.000-07:002008-08-22T10:33:14.038-07:00NZM-BSP by CGSK... 01 july 2008After spending 2 days in Delhi I was (for a change) returning from Delhi. This time I was booked on Chhattisgarh Sampark Kranti. Thankfully confirmed, so I expected the journey to be a bit comfortable as against I had in Gondwana a couple of days back. After finishing with the days proceedings in office at as early as 11.30 AM I proceeded to NZM. I was at the NZM by 1300 hrs. The first thing in my mind was "khaana!!" so i thought of trying comesum meal this time. At 55 Rs per plate its okok.. actually a bit better what we get in general but I feel could have been much better. After having lunch and some more looking around, I went to pf 3 at around 1445 hrs where Gondwana exp was berthed.

I kept standing in the scorching sun near the loco (WAM4/6P) for 20 min or so. I was determined to have a chat with LP!! He had apparently pushed the door to a closed position which obstructed my vision of loco interiors. When 10 min were left in the train departure, the elder one seemed to come near me.. I asked him in the loudest possible polite voice (to let him hear under the roar of loco) what does the 6P means. He answered (with some interest). Our further conversation was:

LP: What do you do?
me: I ve just graduated as an engg.

LP: banch?
me: civil engg

LP: Kahaan se? (From which college?)
me: I said Delhi college of engg.

LP: Outside Delhi ki students wahaan admission le sakte hain? (Are the outside Delhi students eligible to take admission there?)
me: Yes Sir, through AIEEE.

After this someone called from inside the loco. He went in and came out. After a brief pause he said rather determined..

LP: I want to have my son admitted in CIVIL ENGG only!!
me: (surprised.. what else)

LP: (contd.) What are the placement opportunities?
me: Ample.. many companies are there now a days..

LP: main usko sirf civil hi padhaoonga.(I will admit him only in civil engg..)

I was about to come to my interest.. ie my dream to get inside the loco.. but as my mouth opened.. so did the loco's!!!

And this time it was honking loud to announce its departure!! I quickly asked him if he wil carry on till Jhansi... He replied in affirmative and he wved the green flag... I loved his smiling face..... he kpt on waving the flag.. and waved me too with that!! I did the same.. and I cant describe how happy I was.. It was the first time in my life that I had chatted with an LP for that long!!

I counted the coaches.. It was 24 as usual.. (BSP-JBP combined). When the "x" of the train was receding in the catenary maze I said to myself..."Next I find this guy.. I will extrct a footplate session out of him!!" But then again said to myself.. "By the way who was that guy? By what name people call him??".. Then I realised.. how on earth did I forgot to ask his name??

Enchanted with the experience, I went to pf 5 where Mahakaushal was getting ready to depart. There was some trouble with the brake pipe of WAM4 and LP and some NZM staff were busy sorting it out. The LP didnt look in a nice mood and I thought better not to disturb him. There was a mad rush in the train.

There were several arrivals as well.. which I do not recall right now...

Tired of the heat, I sat in the stairs of the FOB.. Meanwhile a BSL WAM4 came in with LHB rake marked NR and halted at line no 2 from pf 3. At the sheduled time AK Raj came in pf 6 with WAP7 incharge. CGSK came in at pf 7 with BIA WAM4.

The run was good. The best part of the journey in this train is punctuality.. It generally keeps its time. And there is no menance of commuters!!! Dinner was served rather late by PC staff.. I enjoyed a good sleep... In the morning.. the atmosphere that greeted me was awesome!!!

The Bina-KTE section always brings up surprises. At one point we were like at the highest point in the region and the trees (as seen from my window) looked small.. it was an awesome sight. The atmosphere was moist with overnight rain and the surroundings were splendid. We were made to halt at "Salaiya" station for 20 min or so. It means we were running before time. We reached Katni Murwara on time. After a longish halt (15 min), we proceded up theramp and the bridge above the lines comin from BSP. Took a turn away from the KTE station and joined the lines which we had just crossed. The Katni station offered a pretty sight from above the ramp (briefly only).

Again a good run till Bhanwartonk. (near Khongsara). We were held up on a curve for more than 30 min. That was the only delay our train suffered. As we approached Bilapsur, our train halted at Uslapur!! I quickly packed my bag and detrained. My destination was 1 km from Uslapur and it would have been 10 km from Bilaspur stn!! (add to it further 8 kms left to reach BSP stn itself!!) A timely stop saves lots of time!!

Well the journey passed on pretty smoothly and the Khodri Khingsara section was again a treat to the eyes!!

Thanks for reading,...Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-89642160424234922192008-08-19T09:53:00.000-07:002008-08-19T09:55:18.774-07:00Waitlisted for 26 hrs!! BSP-NDLS on Gondwana exp..This was the second time I had to travel alone from Bilaspur to New Delhi. The floods in Orissa/AP had thrown Hirakund and Utkal's schedule out of gear. The only option left on the day was Gondwana exp. It was the first time I took the train for a sleeper class ride. Earlier I had did New Delhi to Bilaspur in 2A. I had always wondered what it means to depart at 6 in the morning!! A complete day in the train and then reaching the destination fresh in the next morning...

It was on 28th Aug 2008 that the alarm on my cellphone beeped hard at 4 AM. A time reasonable enough to catch 6 AM train. I dont know why or how but it took me 1 hr and 15 min that day to come to a station-going-ready state. After a few more unnecessary things, i realised its already 5.30 AM!!! And the railway station is fair 8-19 kms away!! But the early morning roads made sure that I was at the pf 4 of BSP station in 20 min. The small rake of the Gondwana Exp was there.. almost empty like the pf.

I have forgot to add that I had a wait-listed ticket. And it had not got confirmed. The TTE confirmed so with a smile!! I said to myself.. "achha hai, hans lo". At 0605 AM our train started moving. I took leave of my cousin who had taken the pains to drop me to the station. As the rain was almopst empty I settled myself in a side birth in S6 coach. The early morning run from Bilaspur to Nagpur was smooth with just one unscheduled stop. Encountered a ots of freight going towards BSP. Rather quickly, we entered into Raipur. I say so because I didnt realise how the time passed. At Raipur, the passengers came finally and in a heap!!! Half the coach was filled up there. The seat in which I was sitting was to b filled in Gondia.

We started from Raipur and again had a smooth run till Durg. And as it happens for most Delhi bound trains i Durg... they get packed!!! Many many people catch Delhi bound trains from Durg. Even Rajdhani.. Durg I think offers maximum number of passengers. An elder lady came to my seat. Her face suggested she was looking for a seat. I offred mine. I was itching to go to the door but was worried who would look after my lone bag!! I settled the bag beneath the side birth and went to the door. The brilliant weather outside made the door-plating fun. I spotted two holiday specials that day and both were headed by a WAG7. Both were literally empty (Probably the last days of their run)!! Well, I moved to the adjacent coach where there was space in between the bith no 71 and the toilet area. I felt like till I get the birth, I should lie down here only. The space was empty as well with just one person sitting with the gate. The door offered a brilliant view of outside world. I brought my bag and settled down there
after spreading a newspaper sheet. I was eyeing the TTE seat which till then was occupied by a gentleman. I asked him as politely as I could, where will he get down. And he replied in the equally polite manner that he will get down after two stoppages. I said to myself .. come on Abhishek.. grab this seat once ad the journey till Delhi would be fun. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the turns and curves near Dongargarh from the door. All my dreams came crashing when a TTE came and made the prson vacate his seat!! And the TTE loudly claimed that he will be taking the seat till Nagpur!!

We reached Gondia and soon 2-3 more waitlisted people joined me and the other person already there. We 5 people chatted over some snacks. The wind coming to my face indeed awesome. The cool moist wind .. woww... We reached Bhandara Road and there two people boarded our coach. The confidence with which they did so, i thought they have confirmed seats!! But they placed our luggage in (by this time) OUR AREA!! One of them was a 30 something guy and the other was his mother. She was under some medical supervision as well. We offered them some of our beloved space. This helped in Nagpur however. When Nagpur came, the TTE proudly vacated his seat as if inheriting a throne!! Everyone made sure that the elder lady has a bit of comfort for the rest of the journey. Many many people alighted the tain from our coach and the same number of people boarded. By the time we waitlisted passsengers were a group and made sure OUR space remains OURS!! All the new passengers settled somewhere in the coach and in pursuit to save my seat I forgot to see the loco being reversed. I was a WAM4. Which shed which markings no idea. The only thing I was concerned was about my rather our space!!

We won the battle.. I cunted the number of people in that area was equal before and after Nagpur. When we were entering Nagpur, a person alighted the train (which was at 10 kmph as our diamond) over the road-overbridge just before the open areas (before platforms start). Which locality of Nagpur is this any idea?? Well the train picked speed and amid the cool surroundings we again sped towards Delhi. Narkhed, Pandhurna, Mulai all passed among the beautiful and engaging ghats. The journey became even more interesting among the waitliste professionals!! Our smiles by now had turned into laughter.

A series of tunnels came and went.... In the evening.. rather late evening, we came near the spot for which I was waiting like anyhing...Hoshangabad, Narmada and Budni!! Thanks to our IRFCA trekkers, I actually felt the curves of the area. One just has o be there to feel it. Thank you guys. We halte at Bhopal. All of us had our dinner after that. Some passengers borded some deboarded. I enjoyed srikhand (after 3 years!!). A teenaged girl had gone for a water bottle and had not returned and the train started moving. Her mother realised this a bit late and screamed suddenly!! We ulled the chain. The girl was howevere intelligent and had boarded another coach. But as the train was stopped, now her same aged brother went out to seek her!! A few mins later both came and hugged their mother. As we were entreing pf 3 of Bhopal, Goa Express was leaving pf 2 and experienced the same chain pulling.

Well it was around 9 Pm when we left Bhopal. At Habibganj a few mins back, saw the Bhopal Exp standing at pf 1 with its looong rake and a sleeping WAP5.

TTE came to us (strange it my sound) but he came and offered the seat to the elder lady!!! Everyone was in for a sleep and I took the opportunity to grab the vacated seat!! The TTE seat for which I was waiting since Gondia!!! I settled myself there in no mood to sleep.

At Bina, we stopped... for the elaborate shunting with the Gondwana exp coming from Jabalpur. We were in pf 3 and Jabalpur train came at pf2. (Bina's pf 2 and 3 are saperate with two mainlines in between.) Before the shunting of the Jabalpur portion, Sachkhand exp went screaming towards BPL and a couple of mins later TN made a dash towards Delhi. The sighjt of a screaming 24 coach charged me p for the rest of the night which still had lot in store for me.

The shunting started. The loco (facing BPL side) detached itself from the rake with 2 GS coaches also. Our loco went to pf 2 and brought the rest of the rake to pf 1 and attached it in front of us. We were now 24 coach superfast!!!

I again had another srikhand and it made my eyes heavier!! Probably just 4 jhrs sleep on the previous night was also taking its toll. Unknowingly I went to a sleeep amid the coool breeze. We stopped somewhere at asmall station. The only thought in my mind was has Rajdhani overtook us?? We were in the pf and the other lines were after the pf. Barely 2 min had passed when a horn came and grew louder rather quickly. And here she came.... the BSP RAJDHANI EXPRESS came with headlights in full glow.. horns in full blow... it blasted through the other side of the pf!!! What a scene it was.. what a thril.... the might of the Rajdhani express was there to see... the thuderous speed... no care about the silence prevailing.. wowww....I still feel short of words!! The WAP1 with 11 coach rake of the Rajdhani... wow.. brilliance in the night!!! I thanked the almighty for awaking me at just right time.. The roar of EOG faded in the diatance and there it was again. darkness and silence!!

That was it... I had a good sitting sleep after that and woke only with considerable light in the sky... The mrning departures from NZM crossed us one by one.. The disappointment was the Bhopal Shatabdi which was at low speed. :-(.

Well.. finally we reached Nizamuddin (late by an hour or so). As usual busy Nizamuddin station.

This was my first trip as a waitlisted passenger for 26 hours!! Infact I so much absorbed I was in my space that I didnt even asked once the TTE if there is any scope of having a seat!! A railfan;s spirit!! hehehe...

Thanks for reading!!Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-23503124713845754252008-08-18T09:46:00.000-07:002008-08-18T10:20:47.965-07:00NDLS-BSP by Rajdhani... June 11,2008We reached NDLS well on time for the scheduled departure of Rajdhani which is 2040 hrs. The board at NDLS showed Jammu AC Spl departing from pf 10 at 2030 hrs and BSP Raj from pf 10 at 2040 hrs!! Strange it was!! I thought that JAT AC Spl would also be a punny 11 coach rake and in that way both the rakes will be brought in by the ame shunter and will head in opposite directions at the scheduled time. But the small display boards at the pf were only interested in showing the AC spl coaches.. after a few min they started showing BSP Raj markings as well!! The same board showing position for A2 of BSP Raj and B4 of AC spl!!!

We thought it better to be near the stairs in case we might ve to shift to other pf... At 2010 hrs, AC spl was brought in at pf 10!! It was a good 17 coach rake and occupied te entire pf much against what I had expected!! The announcer was also least interested to announce anything abt BSP Raj.. pf 11 was empty and the beddings for BSP Raj had already arrived at the pf.

Finally the BSP Raj pulled in at pf 11. It was also brought in by a shunter!! In all the previous occassions, this train was brought in by the WAP loco responsible for its run till BSP. We settled at our coach and I couldnt find time to go and note down the road number. Some things shopuld be left for the morning I thought. We had a good run in the night. Due to some very hectic days prior to the journey at Delhi, the only thing I could think of was having a good sleep.

In the morning, I saw Narmada and we pulled into Bhopal. To my surprise, I saw both Mumbai Rajdhani and AK Raj a few min later at Bhopal!!! They were diverted due to Gujjar agitation. We left Bhopal after a rather long halt and proceeded for our brilliant morning run among the hills!! The early morning run between BPL and NGP is simnply awesome and something which I always enjoy..

We reached NGP an hour late. When we were pulling into NGP BSL WAM4 led Azad Hind Exp was departing towards HWH.We were taken in pf 4. On pf 3 was Samarasta Exp towards HWH and on pf 5 was Gondwana for BSP!!! 4 trains ona trot for BSP. I wondered which will be given a go ahead first!! I wished it to be us after all we were the Rajdhani Express!! But no... it was the Gondwana which was the first to dpart. At NAgpur, I noted that the loco which was pulling us was none other than Babasaheb!!! WAP1 22021 of GZB!! Thankfully we started before Samrasta.

We trailed Gondwana all the way till Bhatapara. We were accomodated in the same pf from where Azad Hind has left and while Raj was in the display boards promptly showed the arrival of Samarasta which was following us.

At Bhatapara, we stopped!! I wondered why after already getting so late?? The signal turned green.. was green for a few min and then turned red.. Samarasta came in at the adjacent pf and left. I went on towards the loco to ask what has happened. Babasaheb has failed!!! Both pantos were down and the Lps were busy doing something deep inside the loco. Soon after Samarsata Mail towards Howrah crossed us. Few min later a twin WDG3A hauled freight crossed at a high speed and so did another WAG9 hauled freighter. Full Boxn rake at sucha good speed is a thrill!! Meanwhile the platform was deserted and it looked like it is New Delhi-Bhatapara Rajdhani!!! After 1 hr and 15 mins we got news that a new loco is being arranged and guess where the new loco was standing?? Right next to our track was a soiltary WAG7.. new and shiny. It did the honours to haul us for the rest 1 hr 20 min or so journey. After a loong halt even the WAG7 seemed like doing a fantastic job..

Uncharacteristically, we were taken in at pf 1 of BSP junction. As we were to catch another passenger for our onwards jorney I couldnt snap the WAG7 led Rajdhani!!

While we were at Bhatapara, me and my Dad had a chat with gaurd. The talk mainly centred around the priorities of the Rajdhani.. The gaurd replied in anguish.."The only priority for the railways is the money train.. the goods train.. rest all is same!!!"

Meanwhile I spotted Chhattisgarh bound for ASR twice.. once with WAP4 and once with twin WAM4s..Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-73855879523403967062008-01-24T03:01:00.000-08:002008-07-23T07:05:07.783-07:00New Delhi to Bilaspur Trip Part 1Finally the night of 01 Aug 2007 came for which the wait of 15 days (since reservation) were like ages! We started at 1900 hrs for our train which was scheduled to depart at 2040 from NDLS. Before reaching NDLS there was an unusual shower and a usual heated argument with Auto/Taxi driver.
We entered a relatively empty looking NDLS station and my first sight was my favourite WAP1. 22034 from GZB came in with ASR Dadar Exp in pf 9. Our train was displayed in pf 10 so we descended there.

I was wondering which loco might be incharge that day. My thoughts favoured WAP1 (which has always been there) or a BRC WAP4 which was seen often leading it. Some wilder thoughts came in favour of a higher WAP loco too. We were standing near the ned of pf 10. I asked a vendor where the A3 coach of BSP Raj is expected. He told me to move further ahead. Just then the coach number display board blinked and indicated that BSP Raj and JAT AC SPl both were to depat from Pf 10 only. Jat AC SPl was to depart at 2030 hrs.

Finally the train arrived and incharge was a GZB WAP1 22037. My coach was fifth from the loco. The rake was Loco-SLR-H1-A1-A2-A3-PC-B1 to B4-SLR. We departed NDLS at 2043 hrs. We halted at Shivaji bridge and Tilak Bridge before NZM for a few seconds. We passed NZM at 2102 hrs. I could see the Bhopal Exp (NZM - Habibganj) waiting for starter at Pf 3 led by a WAP5. (Couldnt see its road no though).

The scheduled non stop run till Jhansi was marred by some unwanted stops. 2230 we stopped again. Dont know where and why. At 2235 we crossed Mathura in a decent speed. (Is there a speed limit in MTJ?). Train was picking up speed but then again we stopped for a few seconds at 2245 hrs. Well in excitement I forgot to mention the occupancy of my coach and its condition. The occupancy was 50-55% on that day. And the coach was again Oldish. Seemed like IR is struggling to maintain this coach! From my window I could see that at 2305 hrs we crossed an Exp led by a Mid Head light loco. At 2312 we crossed Raja Ki Mandi at a low speed. (Again is there speed restriction here?). 2317 hrs we stopped again for a few more seconds. Agra we crossed at 2327 at a very very low speed. After Agra I accidently went into deep sleep. When I waked up after an hour and a half my only worry was "Have we crossed Jhansi?" I looked at my watch and I was relieved to find that there is still some time for Jhansi!

0143 hrs we reached Jhansi and we were alotted Pf 3. Saw some action at Jahnsi too. 18864 R brought in Pushpak Exp. While 20620 WAM4 was attached in its rear. (Does it reverses at Jhansi?) We rolled out of Jhansi at 0153 hrs. After Jhansi it was smooth run till Babina which came at 0220hrs. Finally my moment came at 0257 hrs when we crossed Lalitpur at a very high speed. I could see clear sign of rains in the Pf and my window. Also sound of rain drops beating the coach was also a proof of rains. I wished had I been outside and watching this high speed Raj action in rains in such an odd hour. What a thrill!!!

Again a smooth ride for some times. But we were held up before Bina at 0331 hrs. We finally moved again at 0404 hrs. A very long halt. I only know how I survived it amid repeated requests from y body for Some sleep. We crossed Bina @ 0411 hrs. After Bina we were again held up @ 0422 hrs. I saw in my cellphone and the place was shown as "Kurwai". After that I slept again. Just hoping I get up before Bhopal.

I got up at 0607 hrs. I felt as if we were still. I was very happy to see outside and found ourselves at Bhopal. Finally I managed to do what I have never done earlier. Seeing Raj stop at all its scheduled stops. A nostalgic thought but still.... (after all what else a railfan can think!)Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-74013398155088797872008-07-21T07:17:00.001-07:002008-07-21T07:18:26.883-07:00Passengers anguish leads to chaos onboard BSP Rajdhani!!!I was onboard BSP-NDLS Raj Exp from BSP to NDLS. It followed a very unusual chain of events throughout the journey. Finally the passenger's ire were heard by top railway officials. Everyone was fed up with the poorest conditions in the Raj!! The sequence of events that took place are as under:

1) Train was in BSP station and it was all dirty from inside. FLies all around the birth, stinking toilets... the coach was hell. I called upon the attendant who called a safaiwala who at least wiped out the floor of the coach. Water served was far from being called chilled. The train stated moving from BSP at 0840 hrs exactly.

2) At Durg, there were continuous chin pulling for 4 times. I didnt knew the reason. Finally the train started moving out of Durg and stopped unexpectedly at Murhipar (15 kms after Durg). It is a very very small station. When it was there for quite sometimes, I went to the gate to find a crowd descended on tracks. Loud shouts were audible from there. Then I came to know what has happened.

Passengers of B2 coach had complained about the poor condition and the door of the coach which was not functioning (the inside door). to the train superintendent(TS) from BSP to Durg. The TS did nothing. Thus they pulled chain at Durg to complain the authorities. When they repeatedly pulled the chain, the train officials isolated those compartments!!! The chain of these coaches stopped working and the train was doing 110 kmph!! This worsened the situation.

3) The passengers then stopped the movement of Pantry Car people throuhg B2 coach. Some more protests lead to the stopping of train at Murhipar. People were determined to set things right at that station itself. They were shouting not to let the train move. The gaurd of the train was held and people stormed the Station Master's room. He tried to make people understand that nothing can be done at the small station Murhipar and they should lodge their complaints at either Gondia or Rajnandgaon. Telephone calls were made to these stations. Meanwhile no trains crossed us. We were there for 45 min or more. People were angry about:

a) Unhygeinic conditions
b) Napkins not available
c) Refridgerator of Pantry not working
d) Why was the train allowed to run with chains not working.

4) After getting a written assurance from the Station master of Murhipar that the problems wil be redressed at Gondia, the train left Murhipar.

5) Before Gondia, lunch was served and it was agin of poor standards. Later at Gondia, I found that flies were found in Gulabjamun pack of some passengers!!!!

6) At Gondia, the railway officials expressed their inability to help even though they had the full report on the problems. To make the matters worse, the TS misbehaved with the passengers. The scene was about to turn unruly with the shouts of even throwing the TS out came!!! The polite nature of the Station Master at Gondia calmed the crowd down. Gondia authorities said that they should contact the NGP authorities as they will be able to sort the problems out. The gaurd was not held this time and he flagged off the train. Seeing the train start moving, people were to dash to their coaches!!!The chains were still not working!!

7) 60 kms after Gondia, at Koka station, the train again stopped. I learnt that this was due to some failure of brakes. People shouted of having seen smoke after the train stopped!! The chains were then probably made working and the train ran at very slow speed for next 20 min.

8) At 1740 hrs we reached NGP. At the pf I saw senior railway officials under a cordon of RPF present. I ran to see what was going on. People complained to the Official present. The seniormost offcial present was DRM (or ADRM) of NGP Division. He was also speechless on seeing the vedio and written evidences. Passegers had also written the complait in the complaint book... A further scrutny of the complaint book revealed that such complaints were written almost everytime the train ran!!! The measures that DRM took were:
a) Fridge was repaired instantly.
b) 2 safaiwalas deployed in the train till ET.
c) He verbally suspended the PC manager.
d) Fresh food was loaded from NGP to be served.
e) He said that napkins were loaded, which noone in our coach got till Delhi!!!

However nothing was done for the full complaint book and the misbehaving staff. People again forgot to get the gaurd involved and as soon as the engine reversed, he flagged the train off!! With people still talking to the DRM!! People again took their seats in a hurry and I felt the real WAP1 acceleration!!

9) As soon as we left NGP, we were served with snacks, one more chilled jumpin and relatively good dinner. The disposable cups of morning reaplced by Fibre cups, spoons came packed, toothpik also made its presence felt!!

10) We reached NDLS at 0830 in the morning. The loco was WAP1 22050.Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-90922732892348906892008-01-31T07:42:00.000-08:002008-01-31T07:45:04.093-08:00Railfanning at TKJ, 31 Jan 2008Today was at TKJ from 16.30 to 18.30

1) 16.31 22286 HWH P4 with Poorva towards GZB
Loco GS-GS-GS-HA-A1-A2-B1 to 3-PC-S1 to 13-GS (24 in all)

2) 16.34 27765 NKJ WAG 7 witha fully loaded coal rake was moving towards NDLS. (1730 hrs) And it turned out to be a day of many firsts:

1) First time I saw GR, Rajdhani (conventional and LHB) standing together and add an AC inspection car to the list.

Yes Patna GR was in Pf 2 and was lead by 22074. Dehradun NZM Rajdhani AC Spl was on the track between pf 3 and 4. And AK Raj was in Pf 6 wid WAP5 incharge. An inspection car was idle on the track beyond pf 7 (deep red colour).

2) First time I saw AK Raj departing earlier than Mumbai Raj.

Yes AK Raj left NZM at 1700 hrs and Mumbai Raj rumbled past 10 min later. Wonder when the latter would cross the former!! (any comments?)

4) First time I saw 4 ACs in CGSK.

CGSK was hauled by a usual WAM4 from BIA.It had 4 AC coaches. 1 extra B coach. Also it has 1 extra sleeper coach and interestingly it was attached in the middle of the rake just besides the Pantry. The configuration was:
Loco-GS-GS-GS-HA1-A1-B1-EXT(AC3)-PC-EXT(sl)-S(X)-S1-GS-GS-GS.
Seems like SECR had taken much pains to attach the extra Sleeper and AC3 in the middle of the rake. Good thing though.

The following are not the firsts though:
1) Samta came in with ET WAM4 as usual.
2) Gondwana was to depart from pf 4 22066 from BRC.Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-11975797786193905692008-01-24T03:30:00.001-08:002008-01-24T03:30:58.571-08:00NZM visit... nov 3 2007Got a chance today to visit NZM today to recieve the Utkal Exp (8477).

1) Pleasant surprise to find a separate window for pf tickets in the pf 7 side. Windows in general were less crowded. (May be Saturday's effect)

2) 14:08 hrs: 8478 was ready to depart from pf 2 with ET WAM4 incharge.
22074 GZB WAP1 was bringing in the Goa Exp at pf 7.

3) 14:13 hrs: 22234 BRC WAP4 brought in Janata Exp to Mumbai at pf 4.

4) 14:19 hrs: 16612 TKD WDM2 brought Dehradun Indore Exp at pf 2.
Loco-GS-UR-S5-S4-S3-A1-B1-S2-S1-UR-UR-SLR.

5) 14:25 hrs: Announcement were made that TVC Raj coming to NZM is late by
hrs. (Would the passengers be served Lunch in that case? As the
Lunch is served after 1200 hrs, the usual arrival time of Raj)

6) 14:30 hrs: Went to Cumsum to enjoy a delecious Paneer Samosa and Coke.
The new restaurant at NZM have really improved the quality of food
available at station.

7) 14:54 hrs: 8477 came in with ET WAM4-6P 20568 incharge.

Thanks for reading...Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-54098760031323911482008-01-24T03:28:00.001-08:002008-01-24T03:28:57.350-08:00Bhopal NZM 2155 reportFor the last 12 days I was in Bhopal and returned to Delhi today morning itself. Some interesting observations at Bhopal station,

1) Mangla from NZM with BSL WAP4

2) Chhattisgarh Exp with GZB WAP4 from NZM with 13 sleeper coaches and 3 AC coaches. (How many other trains have 13 or more sleeper coaches?)

3) BSP Gondwana towards NZM was delayed at BPL itself as chain was pulled many times!!

4) 10 min after Gondwana, TN came and was stranded for a longish duration which i feel was due to late running Gondwana only.

5) at 2120 hrs, 2155 Bhopal Exp came at pf 2 from Habibganj and IT WAS JAM PACKED!!!! Sleepers were full!! The passengers found it difficult to board their reserved seats!! Unauthorised passengers had grabbed up all the coaches SLR and all the sleeper coaches. There was a complete chaos inside the train. The people were going to Delhi for some railway and were "Ram Bhakts".

When I somehow managed to reach my birth with my friends in S-2 somehow, I was surprised to find 14 people already occupying our 4 seats. They were all around. There was chain-pulling for endless number of times as passengers struggled to board the train!! We somehow managed to clear space for luggage and seating. Otherwise people simply refused to leave the seats. The whole night we spent seated, among bidi smoke and chants of Jai Sri Ram. Wonder if the Ram Rajya was like this!! We were scared to open up the middle births as this will attract 4-5 more people in our births!! We managed somehow till midnight but after that we decided to open the middle births. An elder gentleman forcefully made way to us and not-very-politely asked us to make a better arrangement of our luggages so that he could arrange a few more people there!!! I didn't know how to react!! Well, people kept on flowing in in the next two stations as well. On both stations there was chain pulling.

5) In the morning, saw a bit of action after Palwal. We were in the last line. From the 3rd line from us, Taj Exp passed with WAP5 at good speed. We were stopped somewhere. Then AP crossed us from the middle line. Barely a few min later, BCT Raj blasted towards NDLS at a high speed. When we started moving after a few min, we crossed an station and crossed AP there as well. I wondered about the priority of BCT Raj. To let the Raj go first, we were stopped, then AP was stopped and we were allowed to overtake AP.

6) Saw Arakkonam WAP1 at NZM. Which train did it came with?

Well, when I was at NZM saw huge number of Ram Sewaks at NZM. Those who will be taking trains today or tomorrow, please be careful. You may also be forced to travel GS in Sleeper.

While in train, I wondered the power consumptiojn of 30010 with our train. 24 coach load and lots of people. There must be at least 150 in my compartment!!!Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7470950433637186972.post-69339550936944609862008-01-24T03:26:00.001-08:002008-01-24T03:26:47.058-08:00Budget Last yr.. We finally departed Nagpur at 1202 hrs. which we should have by 1040 hrs!! As we were leaving I could hear the announcements of AP coming in. And while we were in Nagpur outer I saw it snaking in with a WAP4 incharge. Tata Ngp passenger went towards NGP soon after. It was empty!! A different sight though. Meanwhile before we left NGP, Maharashtra left and 8473 came in at Pf 4. Puri Jodhpur (8473) configuration was loco-GS-GS-HA1-AB1-B1-B2-PC-S1 to S9-GS-GS-GS-GS. (20 coaches). When we were leaving NGP, I saw that 20 coached 8473 was drawn to the edges of Pf 4. (Then thought about the Alok Sir's post where he mentioned about the SC RAj delay due to 8030(or 29).

After NGP we crossed Kalumna (thankfully without halt this time), Kamptee (my birth place) and Kanhan at a good speed. At Tumsar road I saw something unusual. 31033 and 31050 (dead) WAG 9s were hauling a high capacity parcel van rake. We crossed Tumsar Road at 1302 hrs. 1310 we met Mail rushing towards NGP. It was 22 coaches I think. (roughly) Then I saw 21213 BIA JS liveried WAM4. After that we met NGP bound Azad Hind (led by BSL WAM 4) and Jnaneshwari (21 coach).

We reached Rajnandgaon at 1507 hrs. Just enquired from a porter there and he told me that Samarasta has left just a few min earlier. I was really fuming!! Trailing Samarasta and that too when Raj is late!! Well I hoped rather prayed that we will cross it in Durg. Due to Samarasta we were made to stop at Murhipar, Rasmara which are all small stations. 1536 we met 2835 ( HWH ADI Exp) led by a WAP4. It had 13 Sleepers and 4 AC coaches. Meanwhile Raj stopped again!! We entered Durg at 1545 hrs in Pf 4 and to my dismay I saw Samarasta leaving from Pf 3. It was just 3 coaches ahead of my coach and I felt ,like have a chat with its gaurd and ask hime to wait somwtimes!! Again a railfan-like wish. I was cursing again. Tis time to SECR people. Cant they halt Samarasta eXp for a few min and let Raj pass through?? Well my agony continued when we stopped agin at Bhilai Nagar.

From the door I could again see some interesting things in the Bhilai Electric Loco shed. 22210 BRC WAP4 was there!! with its headlamps on. Spotted it at 1607 hrs. I was thinking of the limit when we were held again at "Sarona" at 1618 hrs and at Raipur outer at 1625 hrs. All my thoughts of crossing Samarasta vanished like a distant dream when I saw absolutely no trace f Samarasta at Raipur. In fact it had left a few min earlier from the same Pf where we were in!! We were in Pf 6. 8246 Raipur Bhubaneshwar was in Pf 5. It was led by 16348 WDM. Chattisgarh Exp was with BIA WAM4 in another Pf.

After a long time a funny moment came when we crossed a moving EMU. As there are three tracks SECR wisely used them to allow a running crossing of Raj for the EMU. It was at 1750 hrs. The speed difference could easily be seen. As usual we were again held at Bilaspur outer. But as we were heading into BSP I was presented with a Christmas gift by BSP authorities. Rather I must say my prayers were answered . I am saying so because we were first to enter BSP Pf 6 than Samarasta which was waiting for a birthing in Pf 1,2,3. I thanked Almighty as finally my prayers were answered. We had WON over samarasta. It was a Gladiotric feeling a winners feeling when I saw 22272 yet again. What a race!! In Pf 4 I saw Gondwana had came in with 22361, Jhansi WAP4.

Later I found that Samarasta was held coz Pf 1 was kept empty for EMU which we had crossed and which we were going to take for our onwards journey. I missed the trains in other two Platforms among relatives and the "winners feeling".Abhishekhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07279923018932848229noreply@blogger.com0
